Abstract: Many gas company employees can remember back just a few years ago to the time when natural gas was flared in the oil fields to get rid of the nuisance. During this period and for several years afterward natural gas was cheap so inexpensive that distribution system leakage and unaccounted-for gas was more economical than isolating the leakage problems and correcting the measurement errors. Today most distribution companies are faced with a different set of circumstances. The price of gas is constantly increasing and has become one of the largest single entries on the distribution companys expense statement.
