Abstract: Were we to be given our choices of decades in the history of utilization of petroleum energy we would be hard put to find one more interesting than the 10 years beginning with 1974 and extending through 1983. History has some decades that were more glamorous and some that were marked by major additions to the worlds producible petroleum supplies. But few, if any, were more fraught with crisis, more intertwined with politics, with worldwide economics, with social considerations, and more filled with opportunities for both success and failure. In some decades the petroleum industry has materially shaped the energy future of the world. In the one just past, the world has gone a long way toward reshaping the future of the petroleum industry.
