Abstract: The principles of operation of a new natural gas calorimeter, the CALSENSOR, are described. The objective of its development was to produce an accurate, low maintenance, fast response instrument with little environmental sensitivity. The insirument is based on infrared absorption techniques to determine the composition of a natural gas stream, and consequently its heating value. The specific approach applied in the instrument and its accuracy for the measurement of natural gas heating values is discussed. The principal design features incorporated into the instrument to produce its high degree of environmental stability are also described.
