Abstract: Metrication has been taking place in the petroleum industry for a number of years, although incentives appear to be minimal as far as domestic companies are concerned. The increasing insistance that International Standards (ISO) be in SI metric units has been an important incentive to the American Petroleum Institute (API) to convert the Institutes standards to metric. API approved a Metrication Policy in 1970 and up-dated the policy in 1978. Most companies metrication activities are in the investigation and planning stages. However, some domestic petroleum processing units are operating using SI measurement units.
