Abstract: Prior to the late 1970s most natural gas custody transfer contracts used MCF (gas volume) for the units of trade. Then in an attempt to deregulate the gas industry, Congress passed the Natural Gas Policy Act of 1978. This act stated that natural gas should be bought and sold based on energy content per cubic foot. Since the early eighties it has become common in the United States, and elsewhere in the world, for natural gas to be bought and sold based on the amount of energy delivered. The quantity of energy delivered is calculated by multiplying the gas volume per unit time by the energy value (BTU) per unit volume.
