Title: Variable Orifice Flowmeters

Abstract: The pressure drop across conventional fixed-orifice flowmeters increases like the square of the flow rate. This severely limits the turn-down capability of common orifice flowmeters that employ linear pressure transducers. Variable orifice flowmeters are sometimes introduced for commercial applications where a wide turn-down in flow-rate is required. The effective orifice area of a variable orifice flowmeter increases with the pressure drop. This helps reduce the rate of increase of the pressure drop with flow. This paper investigates the performance characteristics of variable orifice flowmeters.
