Abstract: During the late nineties, the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation (WPS) started to study the feasibility of installing an Automated Meter Reading System (AMR) on the electric and natural gas meters used to measure customer usage. Early on in the process the determination was made that AMR was going to include all of the meters in the system, not just certain classes. It quickly became apparent that no one technology solution would satisfy the entire system requirement and that multiple technologies would have to be used.
