Abstract: The widespread use of high speed digital computers for processing the data from orifice meter charts, temperature charts, gravity charts, and static pressure recordings brought about a need for faster and more accurate means of interpreting these charts and feeding these data to the computer. Seven years ago the Research Department of the United Gas Corporation initiated a project to develop automatic chart reading equipment, The ELECTROSCANNER chart scanner and computer system was one of the devices which resulted from this effort. This instrument scans the orifice meter chart with a revolving optical system and an associated special purpose computer calculates the necessary integral of the square root of the product of the differential and static pressure levels. An ELECTROSCANNER operator can integrate up to 250 orifice meter charts per hour and obtain results that are in general more accurate than can be obtained by other methods.
