Abstract: A discussion of recent experience in establishing synthetic gas plants and review of viable options for gas manufacture to supplement natural gas supplies in meeting future demand. Until a few years ago, the supply of energy was in reasonable balance with demand. Steadily rising requirements caused the building of new electric generating stations, the installation of larger transmission systems, drilling of new oil wells and increases in refinery capacities. Seemingly, there was an orderly, predictable rate of growth and plans for augmenting supplies could be closely coordinated with actual need.
