Abstract: Since 1961 the Institute of Gas Technology has continued a program initiated by A.G.A. and the National Bureau of Standards to provide cylinders of natural gas for the calibration of calorimeters. The natural gas used for this purpose is purified with activated charcoal to remove heavy hydrocarbons and thereby assure a stable composition under normal conditions of use. The heating values of 200-scf samples of the purified gas are measured with reference to a National Bureau of Standards certified standard on a Cutler-Hammer calorimeter. Three measurements made over a period of a week and having a spread no greater than 1.0 Btu/scf are required before each cylinder of gas is considered acceptable for certification and shipment to a user. Heating values are certified to be accurate within 0.9 Btu/scf.
