Abstract: A meter is only an indication of flow unless it is proved. That sounds like a bold statement. But it is true. A lot of people think that a meter always gives you the right answer. They are ignorant of the facts. A meters ability to be right is a function of its traceability to a National Metrology Institute or NMI. You are probably thinking what in the world is that and what does it have to do with a meter. Well, the oil industry has agreed to make all Custody Transfer measurements directly traceable to something that everyone has faith in. And, that is an NMI. The NMI in the United States is the National Institute of Standards and Technology or NIST. That is where all the standards for the United States are kept.
