Abstract: THE DETECTION AND ANALYSIS OF GASES AND VAPORS ON A CONTINUOUS BASIS HAS BECOME ESSENTIAL IN MANY AREAS OF MODERN LIFE, NOTICEABLY IN CONNECTION WITH INDUSTRIAL SFETY, CONTROL OF ENVIRONMENT AND CONTROL OF CHEMICAL PROCESS AND RESEARCH. A WHOLE CLASS OF ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTS USING PHYSICAL OR PHYSIOCHEMICAL METHODS HAVE COME INTO EXISTANCE. SOME OF THE BASIC METHODS HAVE BEEN WELL KNOWN FOR MANY YEARS, OTHERS ARE NEW, BUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTINUOUSLY MONITORING INSTRUMENTS, AND THE GROWTH IN THEIR USE OVER THE LAST TWENTY YEARS, HAS BEEN RAPID.
