Abstract: In the last couple of years there have been several articles published in national news magazines and within the gas industry that questioned the safety aspect of the use of plastic piping for natural gas distribution systems. Although it appeared that the news stories were based on uninformed opinions and the articles published within the gas industry were based on the extremely limited data reported for one year to the DOT as reportable incidents in accordance with requirements of Section 191.9. it was decided that a letailed study of the problem was necessary to provide reliable statistics that could be used to improve both our distribution system operations and public relations,
