Abstract: Anyone who reads a newspaper is aware of the fact that environment and ecology have become very popular subjects within the past two or three years. After many years of neglect during the development of an affluent society, we are finally beginning to look at some of the longrange problems that we have been creating, and steps are being taken to correct these problems and to prevent future problems from developing. This effort requires thought and action on the part of many different segments of our society: the lawmakers, the administrative agencies at all levels of government, the news media, the taxpayer, and the consumer. Professional people in various scientific and engineering fields have a special role to play in measuring and evaluating the problems that exist and in developing satis-p factory solutions for these problems.
