Abstract: I know that most of you are well aware of the excavation damage problem-because you live with it every day. Fortunately for you and for the American public, only a small number of catastrophic accidents have resulted from the more than 100,000 damages that occur each year. Let me show you a few pictures to put this in proper perspective. Even though excavation damage is the number one cause of pipeline accidents, it has not been given the attention by the pipehne industry that a nunnber one problem deserves- at least not until recently, Your Systems Proteciion Committee, and its predecessors have always been in the forefront and in the past few years has made tremendous strides. I am particularly pleased with the committees coordination efforts with the APWA Utility Location and Coordination Council, the group that is coordinating this program for all industries, labor, and government. But Im still not sure the industry as a whole shows the committees commitment.
