Abstract: How do we define high water cut? Under perfect circumstances oil should contain no water, particularly when it has been refined. However, all oil from production wells contains some water content (as well as sediment), even after separation. A general definition of high water cut might be a level at which the content will effect the measurement of the fluid, in particular the oil. (Taking it outside of an acceptable uncertainty, in the US often taken as above 0.5%) In sampling it would perhaps be above 5% by volume of water in oil, this is the generally accepted limit in API 8.2, for acceptable sampling, mixing, operation
