Abstract: Coating shipboard tanks is the Fleets primary maintenance cost. Extending coating service life is the most promising strategy to lowering this cost. The key to extending coating service life is to eliminate coating defects during the coating application. To this end, NAVSEA has developed and demonstrated a fluorescent coating technology that improves the quality of tank coating applications in the field. A Navy Metrology R&D project funded the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop a standardized testing method for optically active coatings, allowing NAVSEA to specify the coating application in contracts and take advantage of the cost savings.
