Abstract: The diagnostic measurements of ultrasonic flow meters allow users the capability to assess measurement quality, identify problems and apply specific corrective actions. An understanding of the parameters that are used in this analysis is an important requirement to perform this analysis. In this paper the diagnostic capabilities for typical multi-path ultrasonic flow meters are reviewed to show users how to interpret diagnostic data. Meters with a differing number or arrangement of measurement paths will also differ in some diagnostic capabilities. Similarly electronic features such as diagnostic tools and on board memory can be an important consideration for how to take advantage of the available features. These factors will be reviewed to assist with the appropriate choice of metering technology. With this background we will be able to see how diagnostics were used to solve a mystery regarding the meter factors obtained from master meter proving an ultrasonic flow meter in a leak detection application.
