Abstract: If all the gas fields in the United States were adjacent to the markets they serve, there would hardly be a need for underground storage. But this is not the case. Most of the gas used comes from Louisiana, Texas, and the southwestern part of the country, whereas the major gas markets are in the central and northern sections where colder weather generates a heavy space-heating load. In many instances, gas fields are a thousand or more miles from where the gas is consumed - about a three-day trip through the pipelines. Yet gas transmission companies and local utilities must be ready to deliver large volumes of gas on short notice when the weather suddenly turns cold.
