Abstract: There are two major problem areas in the operation of gas distribution systems which are accelerating due to increasing congestion and the demand for higher standards of performance. Both areas have generally been considered by designers to be operating problems. There is much the gas distribution system designer can and should do to alleviate these problems. The first area is contractor damage. Underground congestion together with todays high level of underground construction and maintenance has resulted in an ever-increasing problem. A greater awareness and some new thinking on the part of the designers can help solve these problems.
